The 2022 SCBA Washington DC Chapter Annual Scientific Symposium

The SCBA Washington DC Chapter held its annual scientific symposium on December 10, 2022, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. The symposium was successfully organized by Dr. Mitchell Ho of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH and Dr. Xin Chen of Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Lai-Xi Wang of the University of Maryland reserved the auditorium. Dr. Yihong Ye of the NIH served as the meeting photographer. Dr. Yufei Jiang, the secretary of the SCBA DC-Baltimore Chapter, managed meeting logistics. Volunteers from the NIH-CSSA also helped with the meeting.

Dr. Zhe Han (University of Maryland School of Medicine), President of the SCBA-Baltimore Chapter, made opening remarks. The scientific program has three scientific sessions, a poster session, and two career discussion panels. Dr. Kun-Liang Guan of the University of California San Diego delivered an outstanding keynote lecture entitled “The Hippo Pathway: Signaling and Cancer”. The first session on studies using model organisms was co-chaired by Dr. Yunbo Shi (NIH) and Dr. Zhe Han (University of Maryland). Dr. Meng Wang (Janelia Research Campus, HHMI), Dr. Xiaoyan Zheng (George Washington University), Dr. Jiefu Li (Janelia Research Campus, HHMI) and Dr. Wei Li (NIH) were invited to give lectures. Dr. Zhaoyi Peng (NIH/NICHD) was selected to give a short talk. The second session on biomedical engineering and structural biology was co-chaired by Dr. Yihong Ye (NIH/NIAID) and Dr. Tongqing Zhou (NIH/NIAID). Dr. Xiongyi Huang (Johns Hopkins University), Dr. Jinwei Zhang (NIH/NIDDK) were invited to give lectures. Dr. Yanxin Liu (University of Maryland) was selected to give a short talk. The third session on therapeutic strategies against diseases was co-chaired by Dr. Xinwei Wang (NIH/NCI) and Feng Qian (University of Maryland). Dr. Lichun Ma (NIH/NCI), Dr. Heng Zhu (Johns Hopkins University), Dr. Shuo Gu (NIH/NCI) were invited to give lectures. Dr. Zhijian Duan (NIH/NCI) was selected to give a short talk. Dr. Roland Owens (NIH Office of Intramural Research), Dr. Mitchell Ho (NIH/NCI) and Dr. Xin Chen (HHMI, Johns Hopkins University) served as panelists in the Academic Career Panel. Dr. Pan Zheng (OncoC4, Inc.) and Dr. Angela Zeng (AstraZeneca) served as panelists in the Industry Career Panel. Both panels have attracted many participants.

In addition to the three abstracts selected for short talks, six poster presenters were selected for the Best Poster Award including Drs Dan Li, Yue Xu, Nan Li, Binbin Ma, Ainslee Zou and Ching-Wen Chang. The abstract selection committee consisted of seven faculty members from the NIH and local universities. Finally, Dr. Mitchell Ho, the president-elect gave closing remarks. The 2022 SCBA DC-Baltimore Chapter symposium was a great success.
